VOLUNTEER

ImageBy clicking on the link below, you are signing up to receive monthly emails informing you of Channelkeeper news and upcoming volunteer opportunities. Some volunteer activities occur monthly, while others are on a more infrequent schedule.

Volunteer activities include the following:

Stream Team (Ventura and Goleta)

Stream Team is our volunteer-based water quality monitoring program. Once a month (usually during the first weekend of each month), volunteers visit established sites throughout the Ventura River and Goleta Slough watersheds to gather data on water quality. Volunteers test many parameters in the field using hand-held portable meters, and also take samples that are later analyzed for bacteria and nutrients in the laboratory. New volunteers are always welcome. We do not recommend this activity for children under the age of 6. Children between the ages of 6 and 14 should be accompanied by a guardian. For more information on Stream Team, please visit our website at www.stream-team.org.

Kelp and Eelgrass Restoration

Our Kelp and Eelgrass Restoration programs are always in need of volunteer divers and boat help. Volunteer divers must fulfill certain requirements to help with the program- please click here to view requirements:  Diving Requirements.  Because boat trips are dependent on weather and ocean conditions and cannot be planned far in advance, they are rarely included in our regular monthly volunteer emails. Therefore if you would like to help on the boat or if you meet the requirements to be a volunteer diver, please contact Michael at 805-563-3377 x2 or michael@sbck.org to learn how to get involved.

Beach and Stream Clean-ups

Channelkeeper conducts periodic beach and stream clean-ups to help keep trash from entering the ocean and to make our beaches cleaner and more enjoyable for local citizens and tourists alike. We adopted West Beach as part of the California Coastal Commission’s Adopt-a-Beach program in 2006. As the adopted parents, we conduct at least three or four clean-ups at beach each year. Volunteers are always appreciated to assist in our efforts!

Grunion Greeters

Grunion Greeters is a volunteer program that monitors the distribution and spawning activities of California Grunion. Volunteer Grunion Greeters visit local beaches during expected grunion runs to record their observations, which are submitted to Pepperdine University researchers using an online form. This program takes place only in the springtime, usually during the months of April, May, and June.

Special Events

Throughout the year, Channelkeeper puts on several events including the Blue Water Ball (our annual benefit) and a student art show. Volunteers are needed to help with all aspects of these events, from soliciting auction items to selling tickets to helping at the events themselves.

Community Outreach

Channelkeeper participates in several local festivals including Santa Barbara Earth Day, the Whale Festival, the Organic Festival, and other events. Volunteers are needed to help staff the Channelkeeper booth at these events, which involves speaking to interested community members about our work, and signing up new members and volunteers.

Office Help

We are often in need of help here at our office, with everything from data entry to envelope stuffing. If you would like to help around the office, please contact us at (805) 563-3377 x0.
