In response to the current drought, the City of Santa Barbara, the Montecito Water District, and other agencies across California are pursuing seawater desalination as a way to meet projected shortfalls in water supply. Unfortunately, desalination is one of the most expensive, energy-intensive and environmentally harmful water supply options available. Santa Barbara Channelkeeper has stepped up as the lead local environmental advocate to urge water resources managers to consider desalination as a last resort after all other, less expensive and environmentally harmful water supply and demand management alternatives are exhausted, and if they absolutely must pursue desalination, to utilize the best available site, design, technology and mitigation feasible to minimize marine life mortality.
